Social Media in the Future

History of Social Media

It's no secret that social media plays a huge role in our society today. Since the first social media site debuted in 1997, social media has dominated the new age of technology and communication as we know it.

The first social media site was a simple communication and networking site for people to connect with others, called SixDegrees. Although this social media site only lasted 3 years, it set a precedence for the new age of internet communication. Shortly after social media's debut, the idea gained its first huge following with the creation of MySpace.

MySpace emerged in 2003 and became a hotspot for millions of "hip teens". MySpace was designed to create an online place for people to create relationships and share updates with friends. MySpace was well-known for its unique addition of customizable public profiles, available for anyone to create.

MySpace hit its peak from 2005-to 2008 and became the most visited social networking site in the world.

Flash forward a few years, and some of the sites popular today began to emerge in the world of social media. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn began to create traction in the world of social media, pulling in millions of users from across the world.

And while most of these sites are still relevant today, there have clearly been drastic changes and new editions to the world of social media and its impact on society. This graphic was made in 2016, displaying only a 5-year difference with a staggering increase in numbers, proving just how much social media has grown in the past few decades.

According to Statista, over 3.6 billion people use social media worldwide and by 2025 there is expected to increase to 4.41 billion people

Social media has seen a major increase over the years in users and will most likely continue to change continuously as the newest technology and social trends change as well.

In an article composed by CNBC, 11 experts give their predictions on the future of social media.

1) Social Media will control news stories

  • News will be covered by "live streams" of eyewitness videos. "These streams will knit together into a single immersive video, enabling the viewer to virtually experience the event in real-time."
2) In just a few short years, social media will simply be referred to as a thing of the past. We will reference these older social media platforms with a form of nostalgia, as younger generations regard them just as we look at typewriters.

3) Social media will move to become an immersive experience. Rather than just sharing posts, people will get to share experiences through the 5 senses and share an almost telepathic communication as well.

4) Holographic displays will become increasingly popular, fewer keyboards, and physical touch will be involved in accessing social media.

5) Social media will change from standalone apps and operate more like the internet as a whole, creating pressure for advertisers and marketers to reach their audience.

6) People will be able to get the content they want, at the time they want, from the people and brands they want, perhaps even on their projector watch or contact lens.

7) The actual term social media will "fade out" within the next 25 years.

8) Social media will become a part of our fabric of life. It will become accessible through clothes and our "gadgets" will most likely be a part of our person.

9) Social media may not even exist in 25 years.

10) Social media will become accessible through virtual reality. Social media will ultimately become our reality. Through VR we will be able to physically be a part of the realm of social media.

11) Social media will be integrated into everything.

Although each prediction of social media varies, there is one thing for sure: social media of the future will not look anything like the social media platforms we know today.

Just as some of the experts predicted, I believe social media will become an increasingly major part of our daily lives and will be integrated through virtual reality, live video streaming, and wearable technology.
