Assignment 1: Personal Video Habits

There are more than 200 streaming services available in the world today and about half of those platforms are downloaded on my phone. Okay, that number may be an exaggeration, but the amount of time I dedicate to the few streaming services I download is a truthfully outrageous number. But in this digital age and in my specific age group, I know that I am not alone in my streaming addiction. Every day I engage in social media and streaming services, incorporating them into my daily schedule.

Beginning in the morning, depending on how much time I have before class or work, I turn over and open my eyes and TikTok almost simultaneously. I use this to wake myself up in an attempt to make myself ready for the day. I like to tell myself it helps, and I am in no position to prove myself wrong.

My time spent on TikTok rounds out to a daily average of 59 minutes each day (according to my Screen Time). During this time, I scroll through my ForYou page, watching random people in the earliest moments of my day. While I give these strangers my time, I curiously become invested in their lives and content. Some of my favorite TikTok videos are produced by annaxsitar, a content creator and influencer, AxelWebber, known for his personable videos about his life in the smallest apartment in New York, and maiaknight, known for her videos featuring her adorable twin babies.

Along with these creators, my ForYou page is catered to my interests, so I commonly see videos about Marvel, BTS, Christian faith, Disney, or the occasional Elmo video which keep me invested in the app.

Although TikTok is one of my favorite apps to access, I generally spend a majority of my time on Youtube and Netflix. Although I do not have an exact amount of time spent on either of these, I know for a fact most of my time is divided between these two platforms. Whenever I access either of these platforms I am either watching on my TV or on my laptop and very rarely do I use my phone.

I usually access Youtube in the morning, depending on the time I wake up, how long I spend on TikTok and how much time I need to get ready and commute to class or work.

Whenever I access Youtube, the main motivation comes from my favorite artist, BTS. On Youtube, I can access every music video, choreography video, and interview BTS has ever done.

Because BTS is such a well-known group, there are countless videos posted by them, their fans, and outside sources which provide me with enough content that I never tire of. Along with their music videos and interviews, every single episode of the variety show 'Run: BTS' is available to view. Although I do not watch these as often as their music videos, I do dedicate time to viewing different episodes every week.

My access to YouTube and BTS is also used at my house, and it is a way I bond with my sisters. Every time I come home, my four-year-old sister drags me into the living room to dance and sing to our favorite songs, usually resulting in participation with my whole family.

I am aware of the probably unhealthy addiction I have to BTS, but there's no need to worry because on rare occasions I can be found watching the GoodGood Golf channel. GoodGood golf is a channel that features six young men competing in challenges and traveling to golf courses all over America. Their videos usually consist of a round of golf, a competition, trick shots, or insane accomplishments on the golf course

While watching GoodGood golf is a rare occurrence for me, I still find it a notable attribute to my time spent on YouTube. As a golfer, this channel highlights the fun and competitive nature of the sport that not a lot of people get to experience or understand.

Youtube has been an integral part of my daily video habits since I was a young girl, and although my preferences and viewing choices have changed, the initial feeling of enjoyment remains the same.

Another streaming service that has dominated my video habits, is Netflix. Since my dad caved into our pleads in 2017, Netflix has catered to almost every one of my streaming needs. My time on Netflix used to be more varied when the platform carried most of my favorite shows and movies: How I Met Your Mother, The Office, Friends, and Parks and Rec. But even with the absence of these shows I still find myself logging in every day to binge-watch new shows, and my all-time favorite, New Girl.

Right now, my current addiction is Criminal Minds. Each day I watch a group of FBI profilers analyze the minds of the most horrific criminals in America. The team works as a group of 'mind hunters', trying to anticipate the next move from a behavioral standpoint.

While a crime show is not my usual preference, the storytelling aspect and character dynamic draw me into this unique perspective of investigating. Because of the gruesome and horrific nature of the show, I try to watch the show before it gets too late at night.

The episodes usually run for about 40 minutes, so I will generally spend an average of 60-70 minutes per day watching Criminal Minds. I usually finish a complete episode, and then depending on the severity of the next, will determine if I will watch another episode at night. And usually, I can withstand any scary episode, as long as it features my favorite character, Spencer Reid.

Other notable streaming services that contribute to my personal video habits include Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and HULU. Amazon Prime Video and HULU are mostly used whenever I am home for break and watch movies with my whole family.

As an avid Disney fan, I can usually be found watching some of my favorite movies and shows: Muppets Treasure IslandTangledBoy Meets WorldAvengers, and any Star Wars content. And alongside these, I will of course sit down with my baby sister at home and watch Frozen a hundred times a day, whenever she wants to.

My personal video habits are exactly that. Very personal to my preferences and extremely addictive, and now an integral part of my daily routine. These habits are something most people my age indulge in, maybe not in the same way or through the same streaming platforms, but in the comparable way of the mode of entertainment.
